November 2006

I met an old colleague yesterday who is now studying radio, I was rocking to my iPod at the time (its the only way I hear music anymore) so showed it to him and asked if he studies these!
He said “No, Broadcasting”, “Broadcasting, what about Podcasting?” “What are they?” “Radio shows on MY schedule” I explained, “I like to listen to Ian Dempsey later in the day than hes on, I like to subscribe to Italian and American Radio shows and listen to them whenever I want”.
Michael was visibly impressed.

On too a serious note, when you’re subscribed to ten or more podcasts, it can be difficult to remember which episodes you’ve heard. Heres a great solution provided by Apples clever software design:
In iTunes, Create a smart playlist by pressing Command-Alt-N or going to the menu bar, click File and then New Smart Playlist. You should this dialog:
New Smart Playlist
In time you’ll create your own rules to suit your needs (e.g you want to limit the playlist to 10 items if you want to save space) and there are a near infinite array of choices for filtering your podcasts (and indeed your music collection).
For our puposes today, we’ll select just two filtering rules,
First Rule: Podcast is True
Second Rule: Play Count is 0
The Dialog should look like this:
Podcast Smart Playlist
Click Ok, your playlist will appear in your iTunes navigation pane with the title “untitled playlist” awaiting modification, name this “Unplayed/Unheard Podcasts”, this playlist contaains ALL unheard podcasts and may be quite large, copy it to your iPod and listen to it, you’ll always now have a well organized playlists of the radio shows you’ve subscribed too.

Enjoy.

I found some funny news in this story on cnet: MSN Music presses mute on downloads

“In addition to promoting the Zune site, Microsoft is also touting that of rival RealNetworks. As part of a 2005 legal settlement with RealNetworks, Microsoft agreed that no music service would receive greater promotion than RealNetworks.”

Theres lots of comedy and irony in this story but I highlight this nugget of info has one of my favourites, that Microsoft agreed to terms that disallow it from promoting any service greater than Real Networks, which is now Microsofts main competitor, because if you’re buying an mp3 player come january, you’ll be buying (a) an iPod or (b) something else, and since Real Networks has entered a high profile deal with Sandisk to provide a closed system music delivery service a la iTunes and so has Microsoft, that puts them in direct competition for the (b) market.

I’ve launched a new google supported, helpful service, people after a time, have issues and problems with their Apple Might Mouse, the scroll ball can become unresponsive, and the keys on the originally pristine keyboard can become less perfect. Which is why I’m happy to announce my service, available by clicking here: Mighty Mouse Care, Maintenance

As revealed to friends last week, another great piece of engineering coming from Apples AirPort Express(which provides iTunes audio streaming to your hifi, plus printing server function) is the USB port which provides a source of power for your iPod video, simply plug into the Apple AirPort Express to charge your iPod. One caveat(and reason to buy the iPod Charger proper) is that while plugged into the airport express, the iPod can’t be used to play anything or used at all, and a second is that the screen stays on the whole time, an inefficient use of power, Tesla might say. So use the Apple AirPort Express by all means, but remember the two advantages provided by your official Apple USB Power Adapter.

As of this post, iTunes Store is not providing relevance on searches anymore. Being no expert on how relevance ranking operated (I believe it was related to keywords), I’m leaning towards being in favour of dropping the relevance ranking system from iTunes, after all, Google works out relevance using complex algorithms so its wise of Apple to drop a ranking sytem thats too elementary (basing relevance on keywords was obsoleted when google introduced its model, links to and from, context of links, quality and traffic of referer)
